Prolotherapy: Creating Strong Joints
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a medical procedure, which involves injecting a non-pharmacological solution into dysfunctional tendons or ligaments with the intent of strengthening weak soft tissue structures that surround the joint, resulting in increased stability, flexibility and endurance of the injured joint. Stable and flexible joints are essential for long-term pain relief and complete return to healthy living and function.
Most patients do not realize that in order to get complete and effective healing in our bodies, we need inflammation at the injured site. The body, however, often does not provide enough of the inflammatory agents at the site of injury to deliver comprehensive timely healing.
At Performance Ortho, we believe prolotherapy injections are an essential component in a comprehensive Regenerative Medicine approach to natural healing.
How does Prolotherapy work?
Prolotherapy is administered through a slender needle to the injured body part. To ensure proper needle placement our medical physicians use diagnostic ultrasound or video fluoroscopy. Prolotherapy treatments are generally administered in two to six week intervals and a a course of physical therapy is usually recommended to maximize the benefits. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed in the office with a local anesthetic. As of April 2005, medical physicians at the world renowned Mayo Clinic have endorsed Prolotherapy as an effective treatment for many common musculoskeletal injuries.
Regenerative Medicine has proven to be a very effective, conservative treatment option, If traditional medical treatments have “failed” or you are looking for a non-pharmaceutical/non-surgical treatment option.
